Tenira
Duitse vertaling
Tenira is a Dutch variety that was bred by the Instituut voor de Veredeling van Tuinbouwgewassen (Institute for Horticultural Plant Breeding) in Wageningen in 1965. It is a cross of Redgauntlet and Gorella that was introduced in 1973. It has been protected by plant breeders’ rights since 1974.
Growth
Tenira forms a fairly closed crop with large strawberries. The plant itself is not all that big.
Flowering
Tenira flowers mid-season, usually with well-developed stamens, though those of the first flowers are often of moderate quality.
Productivity
Tenira is very productive.
Fruit
Tenira is a mid-season to late variety that produces large, regularly shaped conical berries of a deep red colour with yellow seeds. The first Tenira fruits may be slightly misshapen. Tenira is not very vulnerable, so it is a fairly strong strawberry, characterised by red flesh and a good flavour and aroma. The fruits keep well.
Diseases and damage
Tenira is susceptible to the following diseases:
- fairly susceptible to root rot (Phytium ultimum)
- reasonable resistance to vericillium wilt (Verticillium dahliae)
- reasonable resistance to root rot (Phytophthora cactorum)
- reasonable resistance to botrytis (Botrytis cinerea)
- very susceptible to Alternaria
- susceptible to red spider
- favoured by strawberry blossom weevils
